When I was getting my first car, I was actually given a couple of options from family:
My Dad's BMW 2004 Z4 (exactly as pictured) . He was moving to Saskatchewan so he wanted a truck, he was offering to give me this at no cost. I was super excited, but there where a few problems, the insurance for a BMW Z4 would be outrageous, especially for a new male driver, and it was manual. Among other things, it was completely impractical for Winter.
My Dad's Winter beater was my second option, a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder. It came with extras, like a stereo system (It's like Xzibit did the speaker system, the trunk has those huge speakers and subwoofers and stuff.), blacked out rims (stock nissan ones but blacked out), and tinted windows. The car had transmission issues, it was a manual too (my dad only drives manual), and rust problems. The weight from the speakers actually caused problems in the rear suspension but my dad fixed it. I couldn't get it because my mom thought it was completely unsafe and a overall shitbox.
My third option was my Grandmother's 2012 Mazda 3 Sedan. Automatic. Red, as pictured. My Grandma was originally going to get the Camry Hybrid and I would've gotten this (my grandpa wants to sell the Mazda 3 now and give her the Camry, and then buy me a *cringe* Micra with the money. ). The Mazda 3 wasn't paid off at the time so I ended up getting the Camry. Here I am now.
Money I saved to buy a car just went to College in the end.
What cars did you guys almost get for free, or get for a good deal out of but ended up getting something else?

I had some money towards my first car which my parents matched, then exceeded. Because of this I didn't have much say in the matter. We were very close to buying a 94 Caprice Classic with a 4.3L V8. Instead we got a 98 Grand Prix GT. Very nice car though.

That's pretty badass, do you still have it?
My stepdad gave me the keys to a Ford Tempo at his dealership, but it didn't work. I just left it there, It's probably in the junk yard now.

I was looking for a first car that mom & dad were going to buy. It had to be less than $3,000 and practical. I found a Mercedes 190e 2.3 Cosworth for $2,500 and shoved the classified ad in dad's face. "Hells no, we're going to look at this 1988 Cherokee instead." Damn.

Mazda 3 GTA (2.0 petrol, 150 hp, manual, yellow).
I was looking for a car, and I saw this in a dealership. It was in pretty good nick, but I went to see another car (my current one), and bought it. The Mazda was my B-plan.

In 2012 with $10000 budget and a whole host of requirements from my parents the almost cars were.
2009 Ford Focus. I almost got it too, dealer wouldnt drop below 11k so we left.
200(?) Mazda 3. I really wanted this one to work out, but it was a bit expensive, the interior was a bit rough, and the brakes sounded super weird.
What I ended up getting.
2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. 80,000 miles, heated leather seats, and an upgraded sound system. Not bad for under $9000

Almost had my mom's 1993 Volvo 940 (pic not hers). My parents were shopping for a new car back in 2005/2006, which was when I was getting my license. They were going to replace the Volvo with a 3 Series or something similar, but for some reason they just stopped shopping. Mom still has the Volvo.
When my grandfather found out I had my learner's permit, he was like "I'M OLD AND BLIND, TAKE MY TRUCK." So I acquired a Ford Ranger, which just this morning rewarded me with a puddle of antifreeze in the driveway.

In 2005 I almost bought a running and driving red SW20 with a stick for $500. It had rolled down a hill backwards and into a tree. In the end I decided hammering out the body and replacing the trunk, rear bumper, and a tail light was too much work.
Saw it driving around 6 months later, unrepaired.

Almost had a 325i,
but the interior was awful and it was a shitty car. Ended up getting a Continental. Was a great car for high school, super comfortable, could haul 5 friends with me, and could really take a beating.

A first gen Scion tC and a second gen Ford Focus.
I discovered smart right around the same time I started questioning my gender (2008). When I announced my new development (the smart) to all of my Freshman classmates, they mocked me and laughed at me. My parents told me "that's a gay car!" "that's a girl car!" (irony detected). With all the negative backlash I received, I began looking for other small cars that would be more acceptable.
My first choice was the abysmal Ford Focus. I always hated the second gen Focus. It may have been a good car, but it just looked like a wheeled pig to me.
I actually liked the first gen tC. I loved its conservative looks and coupe body, but I didn't like that it was FWD. I think I stuck with the Focus for a few days and the tC for a about a month.
What happened? I started reading the 2008 smart fortwo brochure (which I still have) from front to back over and over and joined a smart forum. By then, I was addicted and nothing was going to stop me from getting one.
Then I finally got my smart, and all the haters gave me nothing but respect. I had a dream then fought to achieve it.

Man, screw all those people, do what you believe in.
Also, I agree, I hate that Focus. It feels like a hackjob, or a fake, because it doesn't come in hatch form and looks nothing like the Euro Focus.

'64 Lotus Cortina. $600 in a field, sans twincam, in pieces, with 2 Pinto engines & a truckload of parts. I ended up with an also rusty '68 BMW 1600, but it had twin Webers and actually ran.

I don't have a lot of misses because I rarely 'shop' for cars. It's more like I get an idea what I want, sell my car, then buy X.
But my greatest miss and regret is that I was too young when my grandfather got rid of his S1 Jaguar E Type. Silver over black leather fixed head coupe, and he had converted it to a 5 speed. I think he sold it for around $15k when the cars were at the absolute bottom of their market. My XJ12 came from him, and he actually preferred it to the E Type, but that E is my single favorite car in the history of the world

My stepdad's brother was selling a 1997 Monte Carlo. Rough shape, close to 200k miles, and this was in 2006 or 2007. It needed a new windshield and fender at the very least. I could've had it for $300, but somebody else ended up buying it before I got the money. For $300, it would've been good though.
Looked similar to this one. Same shade of blue, with cloth seats and some wood grain touches. Basically a two door Lumina with some sort of sporting pretensions. Not really sporty at all though.

I almost got an '87 Trans Am GTA, just like the above. Black exterior, gray cloth interior, with the 350 TPI/Auto combo. Beautiful car. I was all set to buy it, but then the owner decided he didn't want to sell.

For my first car, instead of my Cherokee I almost got baller AF Camaro that looked like this (we're talking 2006 so that was a joke).
and more recently, I almost got a RX8 instead of the Crossfire.

I almost had a beautiful blue '03 Acura TL Type-S, but it had been in an accident. Ironic because my M3 has been too, but that wasn't disclosed ever and didn't show up on the title or car fax. This car was my first choice TBH.
Then I almost got an '02 Ford Explorer V8 4WD, never really followed through with it because we found the M3.
Then theres the countless Blazers, Pathfinders, Grand Prixs, 4Runners, Rodeos, etc.. But it really came down to the M3, TL, and Explorer.

I spent quite a while shopping for a replacement after my first CVPI got rear-ended, ended up finding a listing on craigslist for a 1995 BMW 540i, LOADED, ~100k miles. Beautiful shape, brought up from the south a year ago. The people were moving back south and didn't want to take it back. I agreed to buy it for $2500 the next day.
Borrowed my dad and his truck, and drove most of the way across the state (PA). 10 minutes from the guy's house I call to let him know I'll be there in a few minutes, and he informs me that someone else stopped by earlier with cash in hand and he sold it to them.
You bet you ass that, after taking a day off work, having my dad take a day off to come, and driving a couple hundred miles with $3000 in cash burning an entire tank of gas, I still showed up at his house.
We had a nice little chat...

I wanted a Delorean for my first car. I found one, found a mechanic, located parts, did my research, but then decided keeping a Delorean on the road with a Burger King salary probably wasn't the best idea.

I live in a complex with parking spaces, and I'm still 18. I don't have the finances or space to own a broken down tempo. The owner swapped it for a Charger R/T when my step dad worked for Chrysler, he must have saved.
it would have made an awesome rally car.

How could you not take one of the cars with a stick!? I learned at 18 and am going to be like your father the rest of my life.
Cars I nearly had:
Saab Viggen Convertible
Saab Viggen 4 door
Saab 9-3 arc
Saab 9-3 arc convertible
Saab 9-5 Aero (I like Saabs if you couldn't tell)
Volvo S60 R
Volvo C70 HPT convertible
E34 BMW 535i sport pack (bright red, every option. had the deposit down and everything but mom didn't think it was in good enough condition and didn't want to ship a car)
All of those were sticks. I ended up with a Jaguar X Type 2.5 with a stick and am thrilled. It handles much better than the A4, is better in every conceivable way than a C class and is much better looking with a way better interior than a 3 series. Plus it's a Jag (my favorite brand since I was a small boy) and I fell in love with the sound of the V6 through the romulus stainless steel exhaust.
Unfortunately a tree fell on it (a ton of cosmetic damage) but I got good money from insurance and can save over the insane cost to repair so I'll be adding to this list of almosts.

I was willing to learn with the Pathfinder because, well, it was a shitbox. But my mother wasn't letting me take it all because all she saw was a deathtrap.
The Z4 had EXTREMELY high insurance rates, (Convertible Sports Car + Teenager + Male) and it wasn't exactly reliable at all (the roof was stuck up, the electronic thing that lowered the roof broke). Also, awful in winter.
I really wanted the Pathfinder, and still kinda do, but he got rid of it. My dad has only ever purchased other than the 2000 Dodge Caravan Sport they got when I was 4. He bought like 2 Buick Centuries, Buick Skylark, Pontiac Gran Prix before the Caravan. All Manual. After that he bought a Honda Accord Coupe, Manual, and a Nissan X-Trail with the 6 speed.
I'd want him to teach me how to drive manual next time I see him, with whatever he drives right now (no clue). I plan to buy my first car as a manual, probably a Subaru Legacy or 1st Gen Lexus IS
